Top Ten Favorite Beginnings/Endings in Books
(In no particular order)
I had this set to be published yesterday but for some reason it didn't work... So I decided to go ahead and publish it today even though I know it's a day late (Sorry 'bout that!). Thank you to The Broke and the Bookish for hosting this awesome meme :) This list really takes me back. Now I want to go revisit some of my old favorites.
PS there are a couple small spoilers here and there so if I'm talking about an ending and you haven't read it yet, you might want to skip over that one.

1. Victoria Schwab's The Near Witch - The Beginning
"It starts with a crack, a sputter, and a spark. The match hisses to life."
Two sentences, and I'm hooked. Honestly, I was hooked by the first sentence.... I did not put this book down. It was one of the most incredible books I have ever read.
2. Kiera Cass' The Selection - The Ending
I won't spoil anything but the mix of hope and conflict along with the stomach butterflies that those final scenes evoke, made me fall in love with the end of this book.
3. Becca Fitzpatrick's Crescendo - The Ending
Right when you think everything is going to be alright, Fitzpatrick turns the tables and leaves you breathless and waiting for the next installment in the Hush, Hush series.
4. Donna Jo Napoli's Zel - The Ending
I know that Napoli's novel basically follows the tale of Rapunzel, but when I had read this book I had never heard the story of Rapunzel. I thought all hope was lost and then BAM true love reigns and all is right in the world. Pretty sure I cried throughout the entire final chapter, it was so wonderful.
5. J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - The Beginning
"Mr. and Mrs. Dursley of Number Four, Privet Drive were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. they were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn't hold with such nonsense."
I don't think any of us will ever forget the moment when we first read those opening lines... They are filled with foreshadowing of the wonderful, magical things to come. It's an opening that I will never get tired of reading.
6. Avery Williams' The Alchemy of Forever - The Beginning
"I feel as though I've been waiting for the masquerade ball for my entire life."
This entire first chapter was mesmerizing for me but maybe that's because I love history and medieval/magical things. This entire book is wonderful but it was that opening chapter that really pulled me in.
7. Stephanie Meyer's Twilight - The Beginning
I know, I know... been there done that. But still, I will never forget the first time I read that book and fell head over heals. I can't quote it because I don't have it on me, but I remember dying to know why she had to sacrifice herself for the ones she loved and being sucked into the story thereafter.
8. Juliet Marillier's Wildwood Dancing - The Ending
I thought that this book was based off of just one fairy tale so the whole time I never thought of any of the other ones. Then the ending comes and a second story (which was obviously there the whole time) come to fruition and your mind is blown. Such a wonderfully, well-written story... When I finished I went to start it over again because it was so good.
9. Suzanne Collins' Mockingjay - The Ending
I cried. Throughout the entirety of the end of this book. It was beautiful and haunting and thrilling and perfect and I could not ask for more. I got everything I could ever want or need from this ending and I was left feeling completely satisfied. This is one of my favorite endings of all time.
10. Mandy Hubbard's Ripple - The Ending
There have only been a few times in my life where I have read a book and had absolutely no idea how the book might end. Ripple was one of those times. I had no idea if she would be alright or not!! It was gripping and I felt every moment of it. This book contained supernatural elements, and yet it was the most realistic thing I have ever experienced. The ending was amazing and honest and perfect. I loved it.
What are your favorites??
Nichole

I must read The Alchemy of Forever soon! I have heard such great things about that novel. Great list!
ReplyDeleteYes, you should! It is such a super fast read, too. Plus the sequel just came out in June so you don't have to wait for it! (That's always a plus in my book...) Let me know if you get around to reading it! I'd love to hear your thoughts on it :)
DeleteYay for Harry Potter! The Near Witch is one I really want to read I just finished another book by Schwab and her writing is fantastic! I loved the Alchemy of Forever! And it's the 2nd time people mention the Perfect Chemistry series I really have to check out that series!!
ReplyDeleteRight? The Alchemy of Forever is one of my favorite books. I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as I did! And yes please go read The Near Witch. That one makes my list of top five favorite books ever. What other books have you read by Schwab? I've been trying to get my hands on The Archived series but she's coming out with three new books on top of that within the next year; one of which is another series! I don't know how she does it but I'm not sure what to read first... If you love her writing though, then you will simply adore The Near Witch. Let me know what you think of it once you do read it!
